Zero tolerance for boozy racegoers: police

As punters gear up for a boozy day at the Caulfield Cup, police are warning people to keep their drinking in check or they may miss the big race.

With up to 35,000 people expected to attend the races in Caulfield on Saturday, police are adopting an early intervention approach - anyone who gets too drunk will be ejected from the venue.

"Our early intervention process is based on the logic that if someone is being problematic or causing a disturbance at 1pm, their behaviour will be far worse by 5pm," Inspector Lauren Callaway said.

Booze buses will operate around the venue and police say it may take longer than usual to get into the track.

The Caulfield Cup race kicks off at 5.40pm.
