A German track rider has died after falling from her horse at Melbourne’s Caulfield racecourse.

Friederike Ruhle, 24, fell from her horse during routine trackwork at around 5:30am yesterday, The Age reports.

Ms Ruhle was treated by on-course paramedics and was rushed to the Alfred Hospital but died soon after her arrival.

She was riding for local trainer Byron Cozamanis and the nature of her fall is still a mystery.

Investigators from Worksafe and Victoria Police visited the track yesterday to gain a clearer picture of what happened.

Her grandparents in Sydney and family back home in Europe have been notified of her death.

One trainer said accidents on track were a rare occurrence.

"But when it happens, it's tragic and heartbreaking but more so a stark and cold reminder of what dangers lie ahead for those who handle racehorses," the trainer told The Age.

Ms Ruhle’s death comes six months after English rider Liz Rice died at the track after falling from her mount.

Female track riders make up a majority of training jockeys at Victorian racecourses.
