Workers stood down before Vic rapist fled

Two employees at a Melbourne disability treatment centre had been stood down over "staff conduct" issues just weeks before convicted rapist Christopher Austin absconded.

Austin, 22, remains on the run after he jumped more than four metres from a building to the top of a five-metre high fence to flee the Disability Forensic Assessment and Treatment Service in Fairfield on Tuesday night.

The human services department says an assessment of security at the facility has been undertaken and an independent review is underway.

All supervised day release has now been cancelled.

Two Fairfield workers had previously been suspended on full pay in late October.

News Corp Australia reports the two were stood down because Austin had been let out of the facility alone and allowed to "meet a woman in a toilet block".

The department on Sunday told AAP the suspension was due to "staff conduct" that's being independently investigated.

"This investigation is not linked to the escape of Christopher Austin," the department said in a statement.

Offenders on day release must pass a "risk assessment process" which is continually reviewed - and be accompanied by two staff members.

Premier Daniel Andrews says the two workers deserved to be stood down.

"Two workers have been stood down and frankly so they should," Mr Andrews told reporters on Sunday.

"What's gone on there (at Fairfield) is just appalling."

Austin - who has an intellectual disability - was serving a five-year residential placement order after being convicted of rape. He has two years remaining on his order.

He has dollar sign tattoos on his leg and finger and a rat-tail hairstyle.
