Woolies workers plea to save Vic jobs

Hundreds of Woolworths workers will gather to oppose the closure of the supermarket chain's distribution centre in Melbourne's north.

Workers, their families and representatives from the National Union of Workers will hold a public meeting on Wednesday night calling for jobs at the Broadmeadows site to be saved.

In June, Woolworths confirmed plans to shut down it's Hume Distribution Centre and replace it with a new warehouse in Melbourne's southeast.

At the time, the company called the new distribution centre the largest single investment in Woolworths history, and said it was confident it will deliver significant efficiency and productivity gains.

Hume staff would be assisted over the next three years to see what options were available to them, a spokesman for Woolworths told AAP at the time.

NUW Victorian branch secretary Gary Maas said on Wednesday despite the announcement almost two months ago, big questions remain unanswered.

"Long service and loyal workers cannot understand why this distribution centre would be moved to the other side of the city," he said.

"We are talking about an area that already faces high unemployment and disadvantage."

The public meeting will be held at Broadmeadows Town Hall at 6pm.
