Woman rescued from Melbourne unit fire

A woman who was trapped by a fire in her Melbourne unit has been rescued by firefighters who broke through the front door.

The 43-year-old woman woke to the smoke alarm in the early hours of Tuesday, after a fire in the kitchen had filled her Armadale unit with dense smoke.

"She was coughing uncontrollably but was still able to dial triple-0 and ask for the fire brigade," according to a MFB statement.

"Firefighters arrived on scene in less than five minutes and made forced entry to the unit."

They found the woman trapped in her bedroom, and she required treatment for smoke inhalation.

The fire was extinguished within 15 minutes.
