Woman hit and killed by Melbourne train

A woman was hit and killed by a train during peak hour in Melbourne, causing train service delays and long queues.

Thousands of travellers have been forced into long queues after the woman was killed in beachside suburb Hampton on Monday.

Frustrated travellers were forced to wait in queues for replacement buses when the Sandringham Line was closed from 4pm after the fatal incident.

Lines of people stretched hundreds of metres down Southbank across Princes Bridge and back to Flinders Street Station.

"It's very frustrating because we're tired, we've been shopping all day and we just want to go home," said traveller Lauren as she waited in the line.

She said she had been waiting at least half an hour, but understood that nothing could be done when someone had been killed.

Commuter David said he understood it was a result of someone's death.

"If it was a result of disorganisation it'd be pretty hopeless but I understand you can't control these things," he said.

But while the train was running from 6.30pm, delays were expected to continue and trams along the line were packed.

The latest disruption came after a week after vegan protesters shut down the busy CBD intersection of Flinders and Swanston streets.

The delays have been compounded by routine works along the city's southeast corridor which have shut down the Cranbourne, Frankston and Pakenham lines.
