Vic girl hit by garbage truck dies

Three teenagers have died in the space of 12 hours as a result of incidents on Victoria's roads.

A teenage girl hit by a garbage truck last week died in a Melbourne hospital on Thursday afternoon, police revealed on Friday.

The 17-year-old was run down in Langwarrin 10 days ago and was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries from which she didn't recover.

The truck driver, 54, was spoken to by police but released without charge.

Later on Thursday night a female in her late teens lost control of her car and careered into a tree in Dandenong.

She died at the scene and two passengers, believed to be teenage girls, suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Then just after midnight on Friday a car driven by a teenage boy left the road in Nathalia and hit a tree.

The young driver was killed and his passenger, believed to be a man in his 40s, suffered minor injuries.

Victoria's road toll now stands at 50 - nine more than for the same period last year.

More than a third of those who've died on Victorian roads in 2016 have been motorcyclists.

Seventeen riders, all men aged between 18 and 62, have died to date, which is double that of the corresponding period in 2015.

Victoria Police says that's "unacceptable".
