Woman charged over Vic hit-and-run

A teenager has been charged over a suspected hit-and-run death in Victoria's central region.

A Kennington woman, 45, was found dead beside the Midland Highway at Huntly about 3am on Sunday.

Investigators believe she was hit by a car as she walked home.

"It's our belief she might have actually been on the phone to her boyfriend at the time she was struck," Detective Senior Sergeant Brad McArthur told the Nine Network.

"She's remained on the side of the road we think for a couple of hours."

Emergency crews treated the woman at the scene but couldn't save her life.

An hour later police were called to a crash at nearby Epsom but by the time they arrived the driver had fled.

Detectives believe that car was involved in the Huntly incident.

A 19-year-old North Bendigo woman was arrested on Sunday morning and was charged with dangerous driving causing death and other traffic-related offences.

She received bail and is due to appear at the Bendigo Magistrates Court on August 19.

Meanwhile, an 85-year-old man has died in hospital after he was hit by a van while crossing a road in Melbourne's north.

Police say he was struck about 6.30am on Saturday at Coburg North.

The van driver, who was turning his vehicle, stopped at the scene and has been interviewed by police.
