Victoria shivers through lowest summer temperature on record

Victorians have shivered through the lowest summer temperature ever recorded this morning, with snow falling across large parts of the state's alps.

The mercury dipped to -5.4 degrees at Mt Hotham by 5am, officially marking the chilliest summer day in the state since records began.

In sad news for anybody hoping to enjoy the summer sunshine, the frosty conditions are set to continue for some time yet.

Weatherzone said the "unseasonably chilly weather" was due to a strong cold front which moved through overnight.

"In its wake, cold, showery weather is persisting in southern Victoria, with snow falling to about 1200m in the Victorian Alps," Weatherzone said in a statement.

"Snow is also falling in Tasmania and the NSW Snowy Mountains.

"So if you're one of the many Melburnians wondering when this endless winter will turn to summer, we can't promise classic summer heat any time soon, but we can at least state that temps should climb into the mid-20s by Monday."

Showers are expected to ease in most parts of the state today but the effects of that cold airmass remain for at least a couple of days.

Temperatures in Melbourne are not expected to top 15C today, with a max of 16C on Thursday before a gradual warming trend sets in.
