Victoria wants more infrastructure money

Victoria's premier says a Sydney-centric prime minister is short-changing his state on infrastructure funding ahead of the federal budget.

Premier Daniel Andrews wants Canberra to put more money into Victorian projects after the federal government committed to spend $5.4 billion on a new Sydney airport.

Victoria is building a series of rail and road projects without federal funding, including the $11 billion Melbourne Metro rail tunnel, and has been getting just nine per cent of the federal infrastructure pie.

"We could of course build more if the prime minister spent a bit more time being a national leader instead of being the prime minister for Sydney," Mr Andrews told ABC 774 on Wednesday.

But Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says Victoria is getting 20 per cent of the national road funding budget, even after the state spent $1.2 billion not to build the East West Link toll road.

"And we're prepared to look at commitments to other big projects in Victoria," Mr Turnbull told the Seven Network.

"We adore Victoria. I love Victoria, marvellous Melbourne. I love trams."
