Vic police still hunting wanted man

A man has been wrongly accused of being one of Australia's most wanted men with Victoria Police releasing his image believing he had an alleged criminal's face.

The Homicide Squad spoke to a man who came forward to police on Monday night after the force released photos they believed to be of Dick, 40, in Melbourne's CBD.

"Investigators have confirmed that this person is not Jonathan Dick, but is the male depicted in the images released," police said in a statement.

Police had claimed the man was holding the same red-jacket Dick wore when he hit his former friend in the head with a hammer on a driveway in Keilor in August.

But officers were wrong and the man in the photos published on Monday was not Dick.

The images have since been removed and police are continuing their search for the real Dick.

He remains one of Australia's most wanted criminals and has been on the run since allegedly murdering his brother, David Dick, who was slashed across the head with a sword at Westfield Doncaster shopping centre last year.

He was named in a Crime Stoppers list of Australia's 10 most-wanted outlaws in August.

Homicide detectives previously released vision of a cyclist, captured on CCTV.

The man, believed to be Dick, wore a red top and blue jeans with a helmet on Green Gully Road at Keilor earlier this month.

Dick's distinct tattoos have previously been circulated. They include a Wolverine versus Sabre-tooth tattoo on his right thigh to knee, and an Incredible Hulk tattoo on his left calf.

Police urge anyone who sees Dick to phone triple-zero.
