Police are waiting on test results to identify human remains found in bushland on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.

A tip-off led police to the grisly discovery in dense scrub near Diamond Bay Road, Sorrento on Friday.

The search by police and State Emergency Service volunteers came after a public appeal for information on missing woman Joanne Martell.

"Since we did media recently in relation to a missing person we've had a variety of information come in. This is one aspect of the investigation," Detective Inspector Michael Hughes told reporters on Friday.

Ms Martell, 45, disappeared in mid-2015 after leaving her dog Biscuit at a friend's house on the Mornington Peninsula but she wasn't reported missing until May 2016.
