VIPs gather for AFL brekkie before bounce

Australia's federal political leaders have sat down to an AFL grand final breakfast together on a day Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull declared was "filled with bipartisanship".

Both Mr Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten were VIP guests at the traditional North Melbourne AFL Grand Final Breakfast before Saturday's big bounce, with both backing the Richmond Tigers over the Adelaide Crows.

"It turns out politicians have a fair bit in common with Tigers supporters," Mr Turnbull told guests.

"The ups and downs, the years in the wilderness, the bad press, the false hope, and dare I say, the revolving door of leadership," he said, as his coalition government trails Labor in consecutive news polls.

"But I'm pleased to say those days are well and truly over at Tigerland and touch wood, they are for me as well," he added, to chuckles.

Mr Shorten was tipping Richmond to win by nine points and an accompanying boom in the tattoo business.

The Labor leader returned home this week from a visit to Korea and its demilitarised zone and had some insight.

"In North Korea, they have a special public holiday just so everyone can watch a parade," he quipped.

"There's tens of thousands of people, they get together, they all wear the wear the same colours, they all sing the same song and they all cheer this one guy with a funny haircut.

"Some of you might be worried about about misiles and nuclear war," but he added if Richmond won, "Swan Street will be more dangerous than the Korean Peninsula".

Other celebrities and sports stars including Kangaroos legend Brent Harvey, comedian Peter Helliar and musician Mark Seymour attended the event.
