Vic train strikes off, but deal confusion

Rail strikes planned for Melbourne's AFL grand final week have been called off but there remains confusion over whether train drivers have a new pay deal.

The Victorian government and Metro Trains say an in-principle agreement has been reached on a new pay deal with the Rail, Tram and Bus Union.

But union secretary Luba Grigorovitch said no deal has been made.

"I'm optimistic we can work through the remaining issues by end of Monday as we continue to strive for a fair enterprise agreement," Ms Grigorovitch said.

But the union confirmed next week's strikes - which were to include refusing to check myki cards on grand final day - have been called off.

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan certainly believes a deal has been reached after a day of negotiations on Friday.

"The government is pleased both parties could reach an agreement that is in the best interest of passengers and the Victorian public," Ms Allan said on Friday night.

A Metro Trains spokeswoman also hailed the new deal.

"We have reached an agreement in principle for a new rail operations enterprise agreement," the spokeswoman said.

"The new agreement will enable us to improve the running of our network and deliver on key government projects, such as level crossing removals and Homesafe."
