Victorian quarantine staff caught out farewelling colleague during lockdown

Victorian quarantine staff who threw their colleague a farewell gathering during lockdown last year will not be fined by police.

The group of hotel quarantine workers gathered in a COVID-19 Quarantine Victoria (CQV) back office after work hours on June 4, 2021.

An internal CQV investigation found most people in attendance did not stay longer than about an hour after their shift.

A CQV spokesperson said the matter was referred to police and those in attendance were stood down, investigated and counselled.

The agency found misconduct and took action against employees "where appropriate".

"CQV imposes the strictest possible infection prevention and control and other safety measures on its staff and expects them and any relevant health directions to be followed at all times," the spokesperson said.

The CQV office site was used as a quarantine facility.

Victoria Police investigated the incident, but said no fines were handed out.
