Victorian jails go smoke free in July

Prisoners have a month to kick the habit, with only 30 days until all Victorian jails become smoke-free.

All tobacco-related products, as well as lighters and matches, will be banned on prison grounds as of July 1.

"More than 85 per cent of Australian prisoners say they smoke, compared to 14 per cent of the general population," Corrections Victoria commissioner Jan Shuard said on Monday.

"We appreciate this will be a major change, and a challenge for some, particularly those who have smoked for a long time."

The ban will bring Victoria in line with Queensland, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, which have recently implemented similar bans.

NSW is set to ban smoking in its prisons in August.
