Victoria to build more schools

VICTORIAN BUDGET: EDUCATION

* $270 million to build and expand 13 schools

* $195 million to modernise schools, including new gyms and playgrounds

* $50.7 million for Turnaround Teams deployed to underperforming schools to lift results

* $85 million to remove asbestos from classrooms

* $75 million for new portable classrooms

* $24 million to lift quality of teaching and school leadership

* $87.1 million to improve kindergartens

* $55 million to help kids with speech, numeracy and literacy difficulties

* $4.6 million to pair 100,000 new teachers with experienced teacher mentors

* $44.4 million for upgrades to special schools

EDUCATION MINISTER JAMES MERLINO SAYS:

"We're sending in our best and brightest teachers (Turnaround Teams) to transform classrooms around Victoria."

CHILDREN AND FAMILIES MINISTER JENNY MIKAKOS SAYS:

"Under these changes, if a child is struggling, we'll be able to get them the support they need sooner."
