Tweet success for Cadel Evans, Vic Police

How do you catch a Tour de France champion? Tweet him.

Victoria Police contacted Cadel Evans on Twitter after his wallet was handed into police in suburban Williamstown.

"@CadelOfficial Hi Cadel Williamstown police have your wallet that you dropped," police posted to Twitter on Thursday.

Police told AAP they used social media in case the 2011 Le Tour winner was heading to the airport on his way out of the country.

Cadel divides his time between Victoria and Switzerland.

The message worked, with a grateful Evans responding within an hour and later posting a picture of the wallet in hand.

"Got it! Now I just need some pockets with a zip. Thanks guy (and girls). #goodpeople," he posted.
