Jury finds man guilty of murder over Melbourne stabbing attack

A man intended to kill another man when he stabbed him to death during a violent altercation at a suburban park.

That's what a Victorian Supreme Court jury determined when they found Malwal Aweng, 28, guilty of murder today.

Aweng admitted fatally stabbing Mayiik Ring, 32, on December 30, 2022, but he claimed he did not intend to kill or cause really serious injury.

He offered to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter but the prosecution took him to trial for murder.

Ring was at a reserve in Melbourne's western suburbs with his girlfriend when an argument broke out between Aweng and the woman.

Ring tried to intervene as the pair began shoving each other and throwing punches, but Aweng then grabbed a knife out of his girlfriend's bag.

He slashed the woman's neck before stabbing Ring in the abdomen.

Ring was able to stay on his feet for some time but eventually collapsed near a community centre.

Paramedics tried to revive the 32-year-old but he was declared dead in hospital.

Aweng looked forward in shock and then started crying after the verdict was handed down today.

One of the jurors also wiped away tears.

Aweng will face a pre-sentence hearing at a later date.
