Driving tests free for every learner and p-plate driver in Victoria

Every learner and p-plate driver in Victoria will now be able to take their driving tests for free.

The state government has scrapped all fees, which is expected help more than 250,000 Victorians on their L and P plates, each year.

The learner permit and hazard perception test that moved online last year will also be free.

Aspiring learner drivers will save $51 while P-platers $133 on their tests.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said slashing costs for new drivers and their families was significant.

"This puts money back into the pockets of Victorian families and makes it easier to unlock all the opportunities that come with a driver licence," he said.

The safe driver discount scheme is also being re-introduced, as VicRoads is privatised and restructured.

Under the scheme, drivers who have not incurred demerit points or committed road safety offences in the previous three years will receive a 25 per cent discount off their next licence renewal.

Drivers can potentially save up to $73 on a new ten-year driver licence.

That discount will apply to renewals lodged after October 1.
