Vic Yiannopoulos protest: what happened

PROTESTERS AND POLICE CLASH IN MELBOURNE:

* Anti-fascism protesters and right-wing supporters clashed outside an event for controversial speaker Milo Yiannopoulos at Melbourne Pavilion, Kensington on Monday night.

* Up to 500 protesters were part of anti-racism and anti-fascist groups, with local residents joining their side.

* About 30-50 protesters from right-wing groups attended, with police forced to protect them as they were outnumbered.

* Five police officers suffered minor injuries by protesters throwing bottles and rocks.

* Two men, one from each side of the protest, were arrested for discharging a missile and later released with charges pending.

* Police and event organisers were unsure of event location until late Sunday night, as many venues did not want to host it due to controversy.

* Three back-to-back shows scheduled, protesters stood outside venue until about 10pm.

* Police plan to invoice event organisers for the attendance of officers.
