Four Melbourne factory workers have been taken to hospital after breathing fumes from a chemical spill.

Drums of an unknown chemical leaked onto the floor of the factory in Knoxfield on Thursday, the CFA said.

The employees suffered breathing difficulties and were treated by paramedics at the scene before being transferred to hospital.
