Vic trials tech to stop drivers texting

Technology that could stop drivers from texting when they're behind the wheel is being trialled in Victoria.

Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer on Thursday revealed the technology was being piloted and claimed "if it works it will be fantastic".

Mr Fryer was asked how the technology could stop drivers from texting but allow passengers to still send messages.

"We are going through some trials at the moment and are hoping to bring in some innovation," he told reporters in Melbourne.

"We are not in a position to talk about that at this stage.

"But when we are ready to talk about it we'll come out quite loud and proud and talk about it (then)."

He said the world-first technology was being developed with input from trucking magnate Lindsay Fox and other industry experts.
