The longest rail line closure in Melbourne since the construction of the City Loop in the 1970s is about to begin.

The Frankston line will be closed between Caulfield and Moorabbin for 37 days from Friday as construction crews work 24 hours a day to remove level crossings in the city's southeast.

Thousands of buses will replace trains, adding up to 45 minutes to travel times.
