Vic town water safe to drink after scare

The water supply in a Victorian town has been given the all clear after a chemical contamination scare forced residents to drink bottled water.

About 700 people were provided with bottled water last week after elevated levels of the firefighting chemical PFOS were detected at a Country Fire Authority (CFA) training facility outside Penshurst.

The same chemical forced the permanent closure of the Fiskville training facility.

There were fears the chemical may have contaminated bores and other local water sources but local water authority, Wannon Water, announced the water supply was free of contamination and safe to drink.

"Until the extent of contamination around the CFA Training Campus in Penshurst is clearer, Wannon Water will implement a more extensive water sampling program so that we can guarantee the safety of the water supply on an ongoing basis," Wannon Water managing director Andrew Jeffers said in a statement.
