The family of young Victorian police officer who died suddenly say they have been overwhelmed by community support following his unexpected death.

Traralgon First Constable Matt Foki, 39, died on September 16 with investigations still ongoing to determine the cause of death.

A crowd funding page has raised more than $27,000 for his wife and two sons, and has assisted his New Zealand relatives to attend the funeral.

His sister-in-law, who wished not to be named, said the family has been overwhelmed to hear the community's stories about Mr Foki.

"It's amazing the impact he had on the people he met. He was pretty special to a lot of people," she said.

Traralgon Police Sergeant Brent Muir said the station was mourning the fit, strong and happy man that everyone wanted to work with.

"His peers felt safe working with him and he spoke to people well. He was always happy, with a big smile on his face," he said.

200 members will attended the police funeral in Morwell on Friday, which will include a guard of honour.
