A Melbourne teen who fled the scene of a fatal car crash has avoided a custodial sentence after agreeing to give evidence against the alleged driver.

The 17-year-old was ordered to complete a 12 month youth attendance order after he admitted failing to render assistance, trespassing and stealing an Audi the night Timothy Jellis, 25, was killed by a speeding, stolen car.

Another teen, also 17, who pleaded guilty to the same charges did not given an undertaking to act as a witness in the trial of the 18-year-old alleged driver and was ordered to serve six months in a youth justice centre.
