A data breach at Victoria's major tax collection agency has led to 4400 overdue notices being sent to the wrong people.

The blunder was made by a private printing company, with the State Revenue Office being notified about the breach on Thursday.

The State Revenue Office said on Friday it had referred the matter on to the Commissioner for Privacy and Data Protection and will be in touch with all affected taxpayers.
