Vic students seek zero on energy test

Scoring zero on a test would spell doom for most students but those at Melbourne Girls College hope to set an example.

The school on Friday will pledge to use no fossil fuels and be carbon neutral by 2020.

That will in part be achieved with energy generated from training bikes and rowing machines in the gym.

"Our school is taking on the repower pledge to set an example," environment team co-captain Thirumagial Arumachahalam Elataendral said.

"Students can be powerful. Through making our school zero carbon we are leading the transition to 100 per cent renewable energy and a more sustainable future for everyone on the planet."

The school plans to crowd fund the expansion of their rooftop solar panel system.

The school's pledge is part of an Australian Youth Climate Coalition initiative.
