Squatters living in homes acquired by the Victorian government will be able to stay put in Melbourne for at least another week.

A last-minute court injunction granted by the Supreme Court on Sunday night was extended on Monday until August 24.

More than a dozen squatters are living in homes in Collingwood, Parkville and Clifton Hill that were compulsorily acquired by the former coalition government for the East West Link before Labor pulled the pin on the road project.

The squatters were handed eviction notices last Thursday.

The government says the properties have been leased by the Salvation Army and are needed for disadvantaged members of the community including women and children fleeing family violence.
