Vic seniors plate plan hits dead end

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has slammed the brakes on a proposal for some senior drivers to display S-plates on their cars.

Under the proposal from insurer QBE, older drivers would opt into a system where they would display S-plates and carry a black box in their cars that measures their performance behind the wheel.

This would replace VicRoads medical and driving tests for older drivers.

The proposal comes as the Herald Sun reports that 50 drivers aged 45 to 89 have died behind the wheel, sometimes because of medical conditions, in 2013 and 2014 alone.

Not all of those deaths counted towards the road toll, which was a record low 243 in 2013 and 278 in 2014.

Mr Andrews said he didn't support the plan.

"No, I don't, and we have no plans to do that," he told reporters in Melbourne on Monday.

Victorian drivers aged 75 or older can only extend their driver's license for three years, and all motorists must report medical conditions that could affect their driving.
