Vic schools face deregistration threat

Victorian schools could face deregistration if they don't introduce policies to manage child abuse risk.

Following a new recommendation from the Betrayal of Trust report, schools across the state will have to have policies that meet minimum child safety standards or risk having their registration suspended or cancelled.

Premier Daniel Andrews said schools needed to be a safe environment for children and young people.

"If schools can't meet those standards then the ultimate sanction will be that they can no longer operate," Mr Andrews told reporters on Thursday.

"We don't think it will get to that.

"We think we are sending both the right message and working with schools to make sure protective environments are possible."

The government has not yet set a timeline on the reforms.
