Vic Rise Up member to meet Islamic Council

An outspoken Melbourne councillor who said the fundamental beliefs of Islam incited violence has agreed to dine with the Islamic Council of Victoria.

Rosalie Crestani, who is a member of the extreme-right Rise Up Australia Party and a City of Casey councillor, was invited by Greens MP Nina Springle "in the interests of social cohesion".

Ms Crestani recently addressed a Reclaim Australia rally in Melbourne, saying the "fundamental beliefs of Islam incite violence, oppression of women, hatred of the unbeliever, beheading, pedophilia, female genital mutilation and segregation with the burqa".

Ms Springle announced in state parliament on Thursday she was inviting Ms Crestani to dine with her and the Islamic Council.

"My hope is that through open dialogue and the ongoing building of trusting relationships, we can show proactive leadership in the name of a harmonious multicultural society," Ms Springle said in a letter to the councillor.

Ms Crestani has accepted the invitation.
