Vic PSOs to be stationed at major events

Victoria's Protective Services Officers could now be posted at major sporting events alongside police under an expansion of their public transport role.

The changes could allow PSOs to help police at mass gatherings around the city, such as at the MCG.

Under the 2014 Victoria Police Regulations, PSOs can only provide public security at tram, bus and railway stations, as well as infrastructure and car parks, however the new changes would relax these regulations.

The expansion of their roles and responsibilities could include ensuring visible presence at large events, as well as public transport stations.

"(This would not) enable them to go everywhere, it would be to enable the Chief Commissioner to designate other areas," Police Minister Lisa Neville told ABC radio on Monday.

The changes come after increased security measures at AFL venues and accusations of overzealous guards.

It was also alleged hundreds of Victorian security guards were not properly trained and fraudulently obtained licenses.

However, the government did not comment on whether the changes were related.

"What we know is the message from the community is they find PSOs incredibly reassuring on our transport network.This isn't allowing PSOs to go anywhere and everywhere. It will be for particular deployment to add capacity, to add reassurance," Ms Neville said.

The government would not elaborate on whether the PSOs would be stationed inside football grounds.
