Prisoners accessed the personal information of prison guards during riots in Melbourne's Metropolitan Remand Centre.

Corrections Victoria has confirmed prisoners gained access to the personal documents of a small number of prison officers, who have been informed of the breach.

A spokesman said the safety and security of the prison officers, and their families, was their top concern and it was not appropriate to discuss any details publicly.

Staff were forced to evacuate the remand centre during riots over the July 1 introduction of a smoking ban in prisons.

Prisoners broke into staff areas, smashed doors, walls and fences, and ruined the fire alarm and heating systems, with damages estimated at $12 million, at the remand centre in Ravenhall.
