Corrections Victoria will review an incident in which a prisoner climbed an internal light pole at Melbourne's metropolitan remand centre.

Prison staff negotiated with the 32-year-old prisoner for more than eight hours after he climbed to the top of the internal pole on Saturday morning.

A cherry picker was used to assist the sunburnt prisoner to come down at 8.15pm.

He is expected to be charged with internal prison offences.

The incident caused the prison to go into lockdown, but cells are expected to be unlocked as per usual on Sunday morning.

"This was a potentially dangerous situation, and Corrections Victoria commends the professionalism, skill and dedication of our prison officers who ensured it was resolved safely," a statement said on Saturday night.
