Ten years of loot on show in Melbourne

Hundreds of high-end items including jewellery, handbags and watches found under a Melbourne house will go on show this weekend in a bid to find their owners.

Police, struggling to find the rightful owners of 500 expensive goods allegedly stolen by one man over 10 years, will hold open days this weekend in Oakleigh.

The items are among the 2000-piece, multi-million dollar loot found under a Doncaster house early last year.

Just logging the items took police six weeks before they began the painstaking task to locate hundreds of owners.

Some, such as rare Prada bags, could be traced back to owners through manufacturers' records.

"However, for a lot of them, we just can't," said Detective Sergeant Nathan Kaeser on Friday.

"We've hit dead ends."

Police allege a 53-year-old man spent a decade stealing millions of dollars worth of goods from homes in affluent Melbourne areas.

In addition to the burglaries, police say he spent the past five years gambling $11 million on Crown Casino's high-rolling tables.

Items still yet to find a home include a Saint Laurent clutch, several pearl necklaces and a $40,000 Longines watch.

Hundreds of potential owners, including some from interstate, have already called police about the open days.

But to view the property, there is a catch.

Those wanting to inspect the items must have already reported the items stolen in a burglary.

The open days run this Saturday and Sunday, 10am to 1pm at Oakleigh Police Station, 1 Atherton St.
