Vic police commissioner fatigued, run down

Victoria's police commissioner Graham Ashton is following his own advice and taking time off, admitting fatigue has left him run down.

The commissioner announced on Friday he would take up to six weeks leave due to "fatigue-related illness".

"I have allowed myself to become run down, both physically and mentally, and now need to take a short break to recover," Mr Ashton said, admitting it's the first time he has faced such illness.

"It is important that I therefore walk the talk, and now take the necessary time to deal with my fatigue issues," he said.

Mr Ashton is known for encouraging officers to seek support when handling pressures of the job.

The commissioner said he expects to be back at work early in 2018.

Deputy commissioners Andrew Crisp and Shane Patton will take on acting roles until Mr Ashton returns to work.

"I very much look forward to returning to work as soon as possible," Mr Ashton said.
