Vic police called to under-15s footy fight

Police are investigating after angry spectators and players reportedly attacked an umpire at a junior Australian Rules grand final in Melbourne.

The fight erupted after the final siren of the under-15s decider between Albion and Point Cook at the Hoppers Crossing Sports Club on Sunday.

The umpire was attacked for giving two consecutive 50-metre penalties to Point Cook late in the game, callers told 3AW.

Thanks to the free kicks, Point Cook kicked a goal and won the premiership.

Video of some of the fight shows spectators scuffling on the field, in full view of young children.

Witnesses say the umpire was attacked and chased off the field soon after.

"The umpire ran off the ground and a couple of young blokes ran off the ground abusing him," caller John told 3AW.

"It was quite frightening, the (umpire) would've been absolutely terrified; he's just doing his job," caller Steven added.

Point Cook Football Club President Ivo Havard blamed the violence on a group of four or five Albion fans behaving badly.

"It was adults behaving badly after losing, basically," he told 3AW.

Paramedics treated a man in his 30s for a minor injury to the upper body after the incident but he wasn't taken to hospital.

The investigation is ongoing, police say.
