Vic paramedics outraged at assaults

Authorities are outraged that a paramedic is assaulted every day in Victoria while helping vulnerable people.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics are not "punching bags" after three paramedics were assaulted and another threatened since Monday.

Acting emergency operations general manager Mick Stephenson said there were 328 reports of occupational violence towards paramedics in 2015.

"We want people to have a good time and enjoy themselves, but aggression and abuse towards paramedics is completely unacceptable," Mr Stephenson said on Thursday.

About a third of the reported cases included a paramedic being physically assaulted, 100 involved alcohol or drugs and 123 involved verbal abuse or threats.

Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said it was "outrageous" that emergency services and law enforcement workers providing assistance were assaulted on the job.

"No one expects that, and no one should accept that. It's not Australian," he told reporters.

"You know what, whether it's the ambulance, the firies or the police, we're all the emergency service and we're here to make sure that Victoria's a safer place."
