Vic nuisance caller remanded in custody

A Victorian man who called police 25 times over four hours after he'd been drinking to mark the anniversary of his father's death has been denied bail.

Maidstone man Douglas Shannon, 50, appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday charged in relation to harassing Victoria Police, being in possession of an imitation firearm and breaching bail.

Police allege Shannon called them 25 times between 5pm and 9pm on Saturday while he was drunk - something his bail conditions do not allow.

Shannon, representing himself in court, admitted he "rang up a couple of times" but said it was because he needed help.

He said he kept calling police to come back because they had left.

When Magistrate Alan Spillane asked why he was drinking alcohol despite his bail conditions clearly stating he shouldn't, an emotional Shannon said he was "celebrating" the one-year anniversary of his father's death.

He said he needed to be granted bail because he had two dogs at home with no one to look after them.

Bail was denied and he is expected to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
