Vic minister faces fire union grilling

Victoria's emergency services minister will face a grilling over a proposed controversial pay deal the firefighters' union wants.

Jane Garrett will front the public accounts and estimates committee on Friday morning, where she is set to be asked about the long-running negotiations between the CFA and the United Firefighters Union.

Ms Garrett is publicly backing the CFA's management - but Premier Daniel Andrews refused to do the same when given multiple opportunities this week.

The CFA says three of the union's proposed clauses - including a veto on management decisions - threaten its existence.

"I certainly have grave concerns around the veto," Ms Garrett told reporters on Wednesday.

"I've made that very clear and I do support the CFA in those matters."

But the minister denies there's a rift between her and the premier.

"We are one in wanting this matter resolved as quickly as possible," Ms Garrett said.

Mr Andrews told reporters on Tuesday he wanted to see the long-running negotiations wrapped up, but stopped short of backing the CFA.

The controversial clauses include an effective veto on management decisions, a limit on the ability of the chief officer to allocate and deploy resources, and potentially negative impacts on volunteers who make up the vast majority of the CFA.
