Vic mine operators to take responsibility

Lessons learnt from Victoria's Hazelwood Coal Mine fire will see operators held responsible for the fire risk at their mines.

New requirements for mine operators to carry out risk assessments and develop fire management plans will be fast tracked, Premier Daniel Andrews announced in Traralgon on Friday.

The Hazelwood Mine fire ignited in February 2014 and wasn't brought under control until March 25, 2014.

As part of the new requirements, Hazelwood, Yallourn and Loy Yang coal mines will each need to carry out a risk assessment of the likelihood and affect of fire in the worked-out areas of their mines and an assessment of the most practical and effective fire protection of exposed coal surfaces.

They will also be required to implement a plan to reduce the risk of fire in the mine, to fight any fires that occur and mitigate the effects of any fires.

"What happened in Hazelwood must never be allowed to happen again," Mr Andrews told reporters.

"Now the mine operators will have to do more to be prepared and keep the mine safe."

Victorian firefighters will also be trained and equipped with the latest technology to battle brown coal mine fires.
