Maths will get a special focus in Victorian primary schools, the coalition says.

Premier Denis Napthine says a re-elected coalition government will provide $26 million to train 200 teachers as maths specialists over four years.

He made the announcement at Chelsea Heights Primary School where teachers are being trained to provide a specialist maths focus for grade five and six students.

"We'll have even more really champion maths teachers," Dr Napthine said on Wednesday alongside his son Tom, a recent maths teaching graduate.

"Maths is crucial to 21st century jobs, crucial to the future of our economy, and it's crucial to the future of young people across Victoria," Dr Napthine said.

"There's no doubt we need to improve education across the board.

"As we are going into the 21st century we need to make sure our children are among the best educated in the world."

Dr Napthine said the announcement followed the training of 200 maths specialists as part of a $24 million program in 2011.

He said the success was being reflected in NAPLAN results.
