Vic man stabs mate, raids fridge for beer

A Victorian man who stabbed his mate 27 times then raided his fridge for a dozen VB cans has been jailed.

Jonathon Kemp arrived unannounced at the home of his friend Trevor Grimshaw with his hands and feet wrapped in garbage bags and launched his attack.

He shouted "You're dead, you dog" and began stabbing Mr Grimshaw with a knife and scissors.

As his long-time mate lay in a pool of blood, Kemp snatched a packet of tobacco from his pocket and demanded to know where his beer was.

He then took 12 VB cans from his fridge and fled.

Mr Grimshaw managed to call paramedics before suffering a cardiac arrest from the stab wounds to his chest and back.

Kemp, 49, told police he had gone to his friend's Whitfield home to get more beer and was forced to defend himself when Mr Grimshaw attacked him.

He later admitted he had no animosity towards Mr Grimshaw and that he couldn't remember his motive for the August 2013 attack.

Victorian Supreme Court Justice Lex Lasry said Mr Grimshaw regarded Kemp as a good friend and was traumatised and confused by the brutal attack.

"He allowed you entry to his home, no doubt having no sense he was at threat," he said.

Justice Lasry accepted Kemp's complex psychiatric state contributed to his bizarre attack.

He said Kemp abused alcohol and prescription drugs to cope with his post traumatic stress disorder and depression.

"It was a bizarre incident. You are, I think, a very troubled man," Justice Lasry told Kemp.

Kemp, of Whitfield in Victoria's north east, pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury.

Justice Lasry on Friday jailed Kemp for two years, with a minimum 15 month term, and ordered he serve an 18-month community correction order upon his release.

Under the order, Kemp will undergo mental health evaluation and treatment for drug and alcohol abuse.
