Vic man not guilty of cop murder attempt

A Melbourne man has been found not guilty of attempting to murder a police officer but guilty of assault and using a firearm to resist arrest.

Joseph George Christiansz, 37, was charged following a shoot-out with four police officers in the car park of a Melbourne high-rise two years ago.

The officers were surveying two stolen cars when Christiansz approached one of the vehicles.

Sergeant Sean Raab called out to Christiansz, who pulled a revolver from the front of his pants.

A shoot-out followed, during which Christiansz was struck by three bullets.

He pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, using a firearm to prevent arrest and assault.

At the conclusion of the trial, Supreme Court judge Betty King directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict for attempted murder.

The jury found Christiansz guilty of assaulting Sgt Sean Raab and using a firearm to resist arrest but not guilty of assaulting the other three officers.

A plea hearing will be held on a date to be set.
