Vic man guilty of killing love rival

A Melbourne man who fatally stabbed his love rival after discovering he had married his long-term partner has been convicted of manslaughter.

Hung Anh Vu, 47, was cleared of murder but found guilty on the lesser charge of manslaughter by a Supreme Court jury on Thursday.

He previously admitted stabbing 44-year-old Hung Viet Nguyen with a hunting knife during a confrontation at Sunshine West in August last year but insisted it was an accident.

Vu was also cleared of a charge of attempted murder and intentionally causing serious injury against his former partner, Laura Chan, who was also stabbed in the confrontation.

He was, however, found guilty of an alternative, lesser charge of recklessly causing serious injury to her.

Ms Chan had been in a de facto relationship with Vu since the early 2000s but had separated three or four times.

She then struck up a relationship with Mr Nguyen while Vu was imprisoned for another matter, marrying her new lover in 2015.

When Vu returned home in August 2016, he became angry on learning about the relationship.

During a confrontation with the pair, Vu asked them how long they had been together before producing a hunting knife.

He stabbed both of them in the chest before trying to harm himself with another knife.

Defence barrister Stewart Bayles told the court on Thursday he would seek a psychologist's report before Vu was sentenced.

The matter was adjourned for mention on Tuesday before a plea hearing at a date to be determined.
