Vic man cries over attempted murder charge

A Victorian man accused of attempting to murder one woman and assaulting another with a knife has sobbed loudly during a court appearance.

Christos Papathanasiou, 32, of no fixed address, is accused of stabbing a woman at her Berwick home last Monday, assaulting another woman with a knife, then stealing a car.

Papathanasiou faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday charged with attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, assault with a weapon, trespassing and stealing a car worth $500.

Magistrate Peter Mealy heard Papathanasiou has schizophrenia and has previously tried to commit suicide.

Papathanasiou cried throughout the hearing and did not apply for bail.

He was remanded to return to court on March 16.
