Vic man in custody after police car rammed

A man who was shot at by police after allegedly ramming their vehicle in Melbourne is accused of stealing several vehicles.

Jason Phelps, 23, asked not to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday, and did not apply for bail.

He was arrested on Friday night after a police car was rammed in Berwick on Thursday and an officer fired his gun at a stolen vehicle.

The stolen car sped off with police in pursuit but the driver was not caught.

The car was later found in Rowville.

Phelps has been charged with 26 offences, including theft of vehicles, theft of registration plates, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, reckless conduct endangering life, and assaulting a police officer.

The 23-year-old allegedly stole the vehicles and number plates between Sunday and Friday, court documents show.

Phelps has been remanded in custody and will appear before the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on September 20.
