A man is behind bars after being charged with abducting, raping and murdering six-year-old Kylie Maybury, whose body was left in a Melbourne gutter 32 years ago.

Gregory Keith Davies, 73, appeared before an out-of-sessions hearing on Thursday charged with the little girl's rape, false imprisonment, and murder.

Davies was arrested at his Waterford Park home on Thursday.

He has been remanded into custody to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday.

Kylie vanished after she and her mother visited their neighbour Lorna Simpson on Melbourne Cup Day, 1984, in suburban Preston.

She was sent to a nearby shop to buy sugar, which she did.

But Kylie didn't make it home.

Her body was found dumped in a gutter in Preston early the next day, November 7.

Police allege Davies falsely imprisoned and raped the 6-year-old on November 6 and murdered her on the 7th.

Before the out-of-sessions hearing, investigators said they were still seeking further information.

They have urged two anonymous callers who provided information in the weeks and years after the girl's murder to come forward.

One witness, who called two weeks after the murder, said a white Holden Kingswood station wagon was involved in Kylie's death.

A second person, who called in May 1997, nominated a person of interest.

The station wagon had also been mentioned by a girl to Ms Simpson as she was searching for Kylie on the night she disappeared.

That girl, who would now be aged in her 40s, is also asked to come forward.
